Serra Helada ( Spain): Crossing the Ridge of the Cliffs

This was no ordinary walk. It was a confrontation with raw beauty and my own endurance.

The route from Benidorm, starting at the Cross (La Cruz) and following the ridge of the Serra Helada cliffs almost to Albir, is one of the most demanding and fascinating trails on this coast.

Difficulty and Rawness:

  • Endless Ascents: The trail is a constant dance of up and down. Every climb tests the muscles, and every descent requires absolute focus.

  • Length and Time: It is over 8 kilometres of trekking on rocky, uneven ground, requiring about 4-5 hours of intense effort. There are no shortcuts here—once you enter the ridge, you must see it through to the end.

  • The Energy of Height: The cliffs rise vertically here, over 400 meters above the sea. On one side, you have the abyss and the vastness of the blue; on the other, the wild, dry vegetation that has survived in extreme conditions.

My Journey:

I walked this trail feeling every part of my body. My 65-year-old lungs breathed in pure prana from the ocean, and the legs that had previously carried me in a sprint through Benidorm now conquered consecutive rocky thresholds with ease.

It was here, on the ridges of Serra Helada, despite the length of the route and its objective difficulty, that I felt no weight. I felt oneness with the cliff, the wind, and the island of Benidorm, which accompanied me on the horizon like a silent witness to my pilgrimage. I set out late, and darkness caught up with me on the asphalt road near Albir. I descended alone toward Benidorm in that darkness without any fear or anxiety. It was an unplanned trek; in total, I walked nearly 15 km that day, which is significantly above my average.
