A day trip to Lud's Church

Nature’s Magical Cathedral

Lud’s Church is a 15-metre-deep sandstone chasm, nestled in the heart of Back Forest in Staffordshire. Some link the name to the Celtic deity of the sun and waters – Lud (or Lludd), which would grant the site an even older, pagan lineage. The interior of the gorge, dripping with moss and ferns, creates a microcosm where time seems to slow down, and light filters from above like through the stained-glass windows of the most magnificent cathedral.

Surrounding Panorama and Landscape The terrain surrounding Lud’s Church is the quintessence of the Peak District’s wildness. Before entering the dark chasm, one marches across The Roaches ridge, from where breathtaking views unfold. From there, you can see the vast, undulating moorlands that change colour with the light, and the distant valleys of Cheshire. It is a space that provides a sense of freedom and the vastness of the world before you submerge into the intimate silence of the gorge itself.

Rituals from the Heart of the Chasm

Touch of Eternity (Bark Grounding) This is the practice of contacting the physical matter of the forest. By touching the trunk of a tree, you connect your energy with the pulse of the earth. Affirmation: “I draw strength from my roots and reach trustfully towards the sky, just like these trees.”

Forest Air Bath (Shinrin-yoku) A ritual of cleansing the senses through conscious breathing in the cool microclimate of Lud’s Church. You inhale the scent of moss and damp earth. Affirmation: “With every breath, I fill myself with the peace of nature and find inner silence within me.”

Observation of the World’s Lines (Crown Contemplation) A ritual of looking upwards, where the gorge walls meet the blue of the sky. It is a search for harmony within the tangled branches. Affirmation: “I perceive beauty in the process of change and trust that everything in my life aligns into a perfect blueprint.”

The Spiritual Power of Space Nature always invites us to such practices because, in its presence, it is easier to cast off masks and return to the essence. Lud’s Church with its vertical energy and Arbor Low with its horizontal power are two poles of the same experience – your return to balance.
