"No Added Sugar" – The Greatest Lie of Modern Marketing
You walk into a shop, search for something healthy, and see it.
Big, green, or minimalist letters proudly proclaim: "No added sugar". Subconsciously, you feel a sense of relief. You feel as though you are making a conscious choice, one that is good for your body. The food industry has just achieved its goal. It has triggered the so-called health halo effect in your mind—a psychological trick that makes us believe a product with a single "healthy" slogan on the front is completely safe for our health. The biochemical reality, however, is often brutal. The front of the packaging is advertising space governed by the rules of marketing, not the truth of human biology. The industry has not given up on designing addiction; it has simply learned how to better conceal the biochemical leash.
Liquid Fructose Under the Cover of Nature
The most common way to legally bypass the "no added sugar" claim is through the use of concentrated fruit juices. The manufacturer does not actually rip open a bag of white refined sugar and pour it into the vat. Instead, they add massive amounts of apple, grape, or date concentrate.
In the industrial manufacturing process, such juice is completely stripped of its fibre, cellular structure, most vitamins, and enzymes. What remains is a pure, dense syrup saturated with fructose and glucose. To your liver and pancreas, the origin of the sugar molecule makes no difference whatsoever. They do not read labels and do not know that the sugar comes from an "organic apple". They react in precisely the same way as they would to white beet sugar, triggering an immediate metabolic alarm.
Maltodextrin: The Legal Sugar Stronger Than the Original
Another ingenious and alarming trick is the use of highly processed starches, with a particular emphasis on maltodextrin. From a chemical and legal standpoint, maltodextrin is classified as a complex carbohydrate, not a simple sugar. Thanks to this, the product can still carry the proud claim of "no added sugar".
However, when this white powder hits your digestive system, something catastrophic occurs. Enzymes break it down at lightning speed. The glycaemic index of pure white table sugar is around 65. The glycaemic index of maltodextrin frequently exceeds 105 or even 110. This means that this "caffeine-free" substitute demolishes your insulin management far faster, more violently, and more aggressively than regular sugar, all while hiding in the shadows of the law.
Chemical Sweetness and the Destruction of the Microbiome
In products marked as "fit" or "zero", sugar is replaced by sugar alcohols—polyols such as maltitol, sorbitol, or xylitol. Although they provide fewer calories and do not spike blood glucose as sharply, they carry a different, hidden cost.
Mass consumption of polyols drastically disrupts the delicate symbiosis in your gut. They serve as fuel for undesirable bacterial strains, causing bloating, abdominal pain, and inflammation of the intestinal barriers. What is more, they trick the reward system in your brain. The tongue registers an extremely intense, sweet taste, which sustains behavioural addiction and the need to constantly stimulate dopamine receptors.
Natural Bombs That Paralysed Metabolism
The final trap lies in products based on naturally sweet, blended fruits, such as dried dates or bananas. Fruit bars scream from the shelves about their naturalness and lack of additives.
In reality, the blending process destroys the structure of the fibre, turning a healthy fruit into a highly bioavailable, dense energy bomb. One small, inconspicuous bar can deliver the equivalent of several teaspoons of pure sugar to the body in a matter of seconds. Your liver is instantly flooded with fructose that lacks the biological brake of natural, intact fruit fibre. The outcome is always the same: a sudden surge followed by a deep metabolic crash.
The Only Figure That Tells the Truth
If you truly want to regain control over your biology, you must stop reading the marketing slogans on the front of products. The front of the package was designed to sell the product, not to take care of your health.
The truth is hidden at the back, in a small, grey nutritional table. Your only real point of reference should be the line labelled "of which sugars".
This simple figure reveals the true, total mass of simple sugars that will enter your bloodstream, regardless of how poetically the manufacturer named them on the front. It is time to stop being misled by semantic tricks and start looking at the biochemical facts.
