Matka Canyon and the emerald waters of the Treska

 

Matka Canyon - The immersive energy of limestone cliffs

On the third and final day of my short stay in Skopje, I decided to devote my time to a close encounter with nature.

Just a dozen or so kilometres from the city centre lies the monumental Matka Canyon — a place vibrant with incredible space, where powerful nature meets history and spirituality.

The morning greeted me with crisp, almost chilly air, yet with every passing hour, the sun peered more boldly into the gorge. It transformed the day into a warm, light-filled afternoon, perfect for admiring the vertical limestone walls carved over centuries, and the River Treska winding at their feet. Lush greenery reigned in the lower stretches, and the wonderfully laid out trail along the banks allowed for an unhurried, mindful walk. The extraordinary, almost captivating energy of this place meant that plans for a brief visit quickly changed. I stayed there until late afternoon.

Most visitors chose boat trips deeper into the canyon to reach the famous Vrelo Cave — a phenomenal subterranean formation considered one of the deepest flooded caves in Europe and the world. Since access is only possible from the water, the boat trip was the sole opportunity to explore it. A minority, including myself, decided to take the hiking trail, covering a few kilometres hugged closely against the rock wall.

The canyon itself and its immediate surroundings carry a unique, deep spiritual dimension. This place is famous for its numerous 14th-century monasteries and hermitages. Right on the shore stands St. Andrew's Church, while higher up, perched upon the rocks, sits the Monastery of St. Nicholas Shishevski. Historically, this gorge was regarded as an isolated, protected sanctuary of solitude and prayer, and the name "Matka" itself evokes a sense of refuge and the source of life.

Thus passed my intense time in Skopje. It was a perfect, energy-infused stopover before the next chapter of my journey — a longer haven in Prilep, Macedonia.
