The Guardian of Pelagonia: How Markovi Kuli stole my heart and filled me with primal power
Markovi Kuli (Marko's Towers) is a place that refuses to be forgotten. Anyone who has visited Prilep in Macedonia even once knows exactly what I mean. This monumental mountain is visible from almost every corner of the town – it emerges unexpectedly above the rooftops, rising proudly at the very end of urban streets. Its two distinctive peaks caught my attention from day one. In the evening, as darkness falls, its illuminated, colossal iron cross presides over the whole of Prilep. This mountain feels like a living guardian and protector, whilst also being the most beautiful feature of the region.
My first encounter with this place happened on a cold, windy afternoon. Initially, I had not even planned to climb to the top. Yet, this space possesses a magnetism that is hard to resist. Surprisingly, despite the piercing chill, step by step I made my way right up to the cross. The reward was pure awe – the close-up view of the mountain and a breathtaking panorama of Prilep and the vast Pelagonia valley. Even then, something inside me was drawing me to immerse myself deeper in this rock, but I could not properly attune myself due to the biting wind and discomfort.
However, I knew I had to return. Today, when the bus dropped me off just a few hundred metres from the foot of the rocks, I felt a powerful wave of excitement and pure joy in a split second. A sense of happiness and gratitude washed over me just for being right where I was. As time passed, a deep feeling of resonating with the local energy began to awaken within me. The desire to know its secrets and hidden power became stronger than anything else.
The Practice of Presence: My rituals among the rocks
I am sitting among the granite rocks of Markovi Kuli, immersed in the silence and the space surrounding me. I have performed three practices here that connected me to the nature of this place:
- Earth-rooted grounding. I placed my palms and feet firmly on the hard ground, allowing the weight of my body to rest freely on the rocks. I felt the powerful, stable energy of the granite absorb all tension, giving me a sense of complete support and peace in return.
- Solar-granite thermal exchange. I touched the smooth, sun-warmed stones, sensing the heat accumulated within them over centuries. I allowed this condensed solar warmth to penetrate through my hands into the core of my body, bringing regeneration and deep harmony.
- Resonance of frequency and breath. I synchronised my breathing with the ancient rhythm of the hill. With each inhalation, I drew in the purity and energy of this place, and with each exhalation, I released everything redundant, dissolving into the vibration of presence.
The affirmations that accompanied me in this space:
"I am fully rooted in the peace and stability of this ancient land."
"I draw strength, wisdom, and warmth from the condensed energy of the granite rocks."
"My presence is silent, deep, and completely connected to the Spirit."

It was time to return. Charged with this unique energy, I walked down to the bus with great pleasure and lightness, and returned to my apartment. I felt – and still feel – that I have been filled with something absolutely extraordinary and precious. Something I will carry with me forever.
Why does Markovi Kuli possess such potent power?
My feelings of resonance, warmth, and vibration are fully reflected in scientific facts and the rich history of this extraordinary hill. I looked for confirmation that this place holds an objective mystery – here it is:
The Geological Battery: The magic of quartz and granite
What I intuitively sensed during the thermal exchange ritual is a unique geological feature of Markovi Kuli. This entire hill is one of the most significant concentrations of monumental igneous rocks (granites and gneisses) in the Balkans, formed over millions of years.

Granite consists largely of quartz, which possesses natural piezoelectric properties. This means that under the influence of tectonic pressure, temperature changes, and the intense Macedonian sun, these giant rock formations act like massive batteries. They accumulate thermal and magnetic energy and then slowly emit it. The human body, consisting mostly of water, naturally resonates with such a strong physical field.
The Spiritual Axis of the World (Axis Mundi)
For the residents of Prilep, Markovi Kuli is far more than just a pretty viewpoint – it is the foundation of their identity and a protective shield. Human feet have trodden these rocks for mystical purposes for millennia:
For the residents of Prilep, Markovi Kuli is far more than just a pretty viewpoint – it is the foundation of their identity and a protective shield. Human feet have trodden these rocks for mystical purposes for millennia:
- Ancient sanctuary: Archaeological research proves that the highest rock platforms (including the famous Čardak terrace) served as pagan places of sun worship and natural astronomical observatories as early as the Bronze and Iron Ages.
- 77 Churches: The historic neighbourhood of Varoš lies at the foot of the towers. In the Middle Ages, no fewer than 77 churches and monasteries were built there! Christian monks knew exactly where to construct their temples – the Monastery of St Archangel Michael was literally "blended" into the raw granite rock, merging human faith with the primal power of the earth.
Markovi Kuli teaches us that the most beautiful journeys are those where we allow ourselves to simply be and feel. I returned richer, carrying an energy that will remain within me forever.
