The mass addition of sugar to almost every processed product is neither an accident nor a matter of culinary imagination on the part of manufacturers.
It is a cold calculation aimed at triggering a loop of constant hunger. It is also a way to mask the abysmal, lifeless quality of raw base materials. Where natural food would lose its flavour and structure due to drastic industrial processing, sugar steps in as a cheap filler. It does not merely artificially bulk up a product. Above all, it guarantees that the consumer will return for another dose of momentary "energy". This cheapest of bulking agents has, in reality, become the most powerful tool of behavioural control, designing human purchasing patterns and physiological needs on a mass scale.The Dopamine Trap: How the Industry Deceives Our Brain
The mechanism behind this is deeply rooted in our evolutionary biology, yet modern industry has ruthlessly distorted it and turned it against us. When sugar hits the tongue, sweet taste receptors immediately send a signal to the brain, triggering a dopamine cascade in the reward system – in the exact same areas, such as the nucleus accumbens, that are activated by psychoactive substances with the highest addictive potential, including cocaine. This sudden explosion of dopamine provides a temporary, illusory sense of safety, calm, and relief. Immediately following it, a swift, emergency release of insulin by the pancreas takes place. The organism must react instantly, as a high concentration of free glucose in the blood poses a direct threat to it. As insulin rapidly forces sugar into the cells, blood sugar levels plummet, triggering a severe energy crash. At this point, the brain, registering a sudden deficit of easy fuel, generates an alarm signal and a demand for another portion of sweets. A neurochemical vicious cycle is established – a biochemical leash that forces a continuous reaching for the next dose, making sugar the most widespread psychoactive substance in the world, administered to humans from their earliest years of life.
Tissue Caramelisation: Destructive Force at the Cellular Level
The long-term harm of this process to human biology goes far beyond the widely discussed issue of extra pounds. Sugar in a refined, artificially concentrated form acts at a cellular level like a slow, destructive acid that literally extinguishes the body's natural vitality. Constant maintenance of high glucose levels leads to protein glycation – a process in which sugar molecules chaotically and irreversibly bind with body proteins such as collagen, elastin, or haemoglobin. From a metabolic perspective, a particular threat is fructose, commonly used in the industry in the form of glucose-fructose syrups.
