The Art of Mindfulness and Presence

What is it like simply to be?

To be – just like that, without intention, without a plan, without a task to perform – is a state in which the tension between where you are and where you "should" be disappears.

In the ordinary mode of doing, the mind constantly leaps into the future or wanders back to the past. It analyses, compares, devises strategies, and categorises the world around us. This is clearly visible when sightseeing or travelling: "this is peak X", "this is route Y", "I must take a photo here". The mind labels reality instead of dwelling within it.

When you transition into a state of quiet being, a profound shift occurs:

The world ceases to be a backdrop and becomes a presence. The warmth of dry grass beneath your back, the scent of the air before rain, the rustle of the wind, or the light breaking through the clouds are no longer mere sensory information. They become a full, vibrant, and grounded experience.

Time slows down and entirely loses its pressure. The rushed full stop at the end of the sentence vanishes, as does the chasing clock. All that remains is the unfolding moment, in which nothing needs to be rushed.

The distance between you and your surroundings dissolves. You stop observing the space and the mountains from the outside, like a picture on a screen. You become part of the very same landscape, breathing the same air, sharing the same space with the path that lies waiting beside you.

To be is simply to set aside all cognitive tools, allow the senses to lead, and settle into a quiet, unforced awareness: I am here, and that is more than enough.
