Reconnecting with Basketball After Years: Body Memory

Body Memory: Returning to the Court in Serbia

For fourteen years of my youth, until I was twenty-four, basketball was a constant rhythm of daily life.

Although physical activity and movement have been a continuous part of my life in recent years, basketball itself was set aside completely. For four decades, my relationship with the sport was reduced to occasionally watching a game.

During my current stay in the Serbian mountains, this dormant part of my history unexpectedly returned. Serbia is a country with a deep passion for basketball. Right next to the hotel, amidst the crisp mountain air, lies an open sports court with hoops. Every day, people of various ages gather there to shoot baskets and enjoy moving their bodies. I read this as a quiet sign and an invitation to step back onto the court.

A ball found its way into my hands, and practising with it became a natural part of my outdoor mornings.

What moved me most was the profound wisdom of body memory. Even though a long time has passed since my youth, and the body no longer has the same dynamics as forty years ago, it remembered almost everything. The familiar rhythm of dribbling, the position of the hands when shooting, and the coordination all returned with remarkable ease. The mind may hold memories as distant images, but the nervous system and muscles retain them as living blueprints, ready to be brought back to life.

Training on the court under the Serbian sky brought me immense satisfaction. It was not about competition or scores, but about honoring the body's history and reconnecting the past with the present. After these fulfilling mornings, I feel a deep sense of contentment. The old passion was touched once again, lived through, and fully welcomed.
